Hexicle Dishware Set

Design challenge: Create a unique and distinctive set of tableware for a client seeking to incorporate a hexagonal motif to compliment their modern decor.

Design concepts initially revolved around a hexagonal base with circular rim, but the client also liked inverted patterns, with a circular base and hexagonal rim. The hexagonal surfaces spiral either counterclockwise or clockwise to meld into a circular form, offering a juxtaposition that is both visual and tactile.

The initial item developed was the tall tumbler, which served as a model for additional pieces; two plates, two bowls, a creamer, and a spoon

Modeling the prototypes for this dishware set involved 3-D printing with PLA plastic, so that the client could enlist a stoneware manufacturer to create pour molds for larger-scale production. The client has assigned rights to this style to Lee Design Works, which will allow further development of serving pieces and additional tableware.
